Feb 2012 - The Campaign To Pardon Alan Turing

23 February 2012 by Pure Radio

Mathematician Alan Turing was instrumental in cracking the Nazi’s secret code during the Second World War, as well as being a pioneer in the field of computing.

After being convicted for being homosexual, he was made to undergo chemical castration. He committed suicide shortly after, in 1954.

This year marks one hundred years since his birth. And a number of people are asking the government to pardon Alan.

Part of the campaign is Withington MP, John Leech. He spoke to Under the Rainbow.

A statue to Alan Turing has stood in Manchester’s Gay Village for the past decade. He was instrumental in the history of computing, and died in 1954 after being persecuted for his sexuality. The Manchester Literature Festival will be holding an event later this month, about some of his work. Under the Rainbow heard from two of the people involved in the event, Dr Martyn Amos and Jane Rogers.
