Cancer Doesn't Do Labels

Cancer can affect anyone, and transgender people can face additional barriers to diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Next Tuesday Wythenshawe Hospital will be hosting an event looking at what can be done to ensure transgender people are adequately served by healthcare professionals.

Under the Rainbow heard from Ben Heyworth, the founder of the LGBT Cancer Support Alliance, and Tara Hewitt, from the University Hospital South Manchester NHS Trust.

Action for Trans Health

Action for Trans Health is an organisation that aims to improve the lives of anyone who identifies as transgender.

They raise money, which is then allocated to trans people in need.

Penguin Pride

Publishers Penguin Random House have created a new book festival – Penguin Pride.

It celebrates books by lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans authors. With reading lists and interactive discussions, it hopes to introduce readers to new voices, and inspire the next generation of writers.

Under the Rainbow has been speaking to Zainab Juma, who is the Creative Manager for the Penguin Brand.

She said her favourite LGBT authors were James Baldwin and Stockport’s Christopher Isherwood.

People Like Us Stockport

People Like Us Stockport is a social group for the borough’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community.

They meet regularly in the Arden Arms pub in Stockport, as well running other events, and they even walk in the Manchester Pride parade.

Last night they held their Annual General Meeting, where they elected their committee, and planned future events. Once they’d taken care of all the business, they had a quiz.

Under the Rainbow went along to chat to the group’s Chairperson, Chris Hassall.

Connect - Manchester's New Trans Social Group

Connect is a new social group for people aged 18 to 35 who identify as trans. That’s anyone who feels that their gender identity does not correspond to the sex assigned to them at birth.
