Winner’s of Stockport’s Finest 2015, The Hayes Sisters came into Pure to talk to Paul Holloway, receive their trophy, (supplied by GB Trophies in Davenport) and to record a song in our studio.
‘The New Ballad of John Axon’ pays tribute to a train driver from the Edgeley Depot, who gave his life in 1957 while trying to stop a runaway freight train passing through Chapel-en-le-Frith station after it’s brakes failed. John Axon was posthumously awarded the George Cross for his bravery.
The Hayes Sisters are not the first artists to write a song about this local hero. Ewan MacColl, famous for writing many a folk standard including ‘Dirty Old Town’, penned the ‘The Ballad of John Axon’. The Hayes Sisters song is a new composition with just an acknowledging nod to MacColl’s work by borrowing a line from his song.
