LGBT History Month - It's Queer Up North?

February is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans History Month.

On Saturday the 6th, the Working Class Movement Library in Salford will be hosting an event about working-class men and same-sex desires in the 20th century.

It will include readings by ex-Smiths drummer Mike Joyce, and a talk by Helen Smith from the University of Lincoln. Under the Rainbow has been speaking with Helen.

Mr Holmes is currently in the cinema, with Sir Ian McKellen playing the part of an ageing Sherlock Holmes.

Ian has said he’ll take on fewer acting roles in the future, in order to concentrate on writing his autobiography – after he signed a deal with publishers, worth a reported one million pounds.

Tonight, Under the Rainbow looks back at when he visited the Garrick Theatre in Stockport.

Ian explained why he thought more lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans celebrities don’t come out of the closet.

Sir Ian McKellen Visits The Garrick Theatre In Stockport

Ian McKellen came to Stockport on 10 May 2008 to unveil a plaque commemorating the start of the Garrick Theatre in Stockport.

The Stockport Garrick was founded in 1901 at the Church Coffee Tavern (now Natwest Bank) on Petersgate.

Stephen from Under the Rainbow chatted with him about the
importance of theatre and being an openly gay man.
