Last week they heard about the PROUD study, which looked into the effectiveness of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. The research showed that the drug can significantly reduce the likelihood of HIV infections.

Tonight, Under the Rainbow will hear more from Michael Brady, who is the Principal Clinical Investigator of the study at Kings College Hospital in London.

Sep 2015 - Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (or PReP for short) is a drug which may prevent people catching HIV.

The PROUD study enlisted over five hundred individuals that were deemed to be at high risk of catching the virus – in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the drug.

Gay and bisexual men are disproportionately affected by HIV in Stockport, and across the UK. The study recruited those from this group who were most likely to put themselves at risk.

Under the Rainbow spoke to Michael Brady, the Principal Clinical Investigator of the research at Kings College Hospital in London.

Jul 2015 - PROUD Study Documentary

The PROUD study recruited gay and bisexual men to take a drug which reduces the chances of contracting HIV.

Their results have been so good that they’re now calling for the drug to be available through the NHS.

Under the Rainbow found out about a documentary film – which explores why we need it, how effective it is, and what the next steps are for access in the UK.

Oct 2013 - Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis - HIV Prevention Study

Last year in Stockport there were 21 new diagnoses of HIV, and almost 450 in Greater Manchester as a whole.

There’s currently a medical trail of a drug which may help reduce the number of new infections. The study is looking for gay and bisexual men who are currently putting themselves as risk through unprotected sex.

Professor Sheena McCormack of the Medical Research Council’s Clinical Trials Unit has been speaking to Under the Rainbow.
